Day 40: Gunnison, CO

Day 40

June 25, 2015

Miles: 26

Sapinero to Gunnison

We left Sapinero this morning with great anticipation because today Jen and Ben would be at our destination town.  After a quick cup of coffee and a breakfast burrito, we were off to Gunnison.  It was a gorgeuos ride; every mile of it.  We rode 20 miles of the 26 miles around Blue Mesa Lake.

We made it to Gunnison at about 12:30pm and quickly searched for Jen and Ben. They were holding out at a deli, very near to the bike shop they had dropped their bikes earlier.  Their bikes were in deperate need of a tune-up.  I guess this is what bicyclists do.  Visit every bike shop in the towns they tour through.  We went into three different bike shops looking for the right gloves and water bottles, no new bike seats needed this time :).

It was so special for us to see Jen and Ben. Wow! Of course Steve and Jen were emotional as Ben and I watched on.  We just love spending time with Jen and Ben.  It is because of them that we are riding cross-country.  They did it first; what an inspiration they have been to us.  We had lunch and caught up on lots of biking stories between us.  The good, bad and ugly of course.  They know exactly what we are going through, so it was great swapping details of our rides. After lunch we headed to the hotel to take showers, and rest up for the town block party.  Apparently, they have block parties here in Gunnison.

Dinner next at a great little place on main street.  We all ordered salmon, but it was the delicious spicy beet salad that we all enjoyed more!  Jen tasted some of it from Steve's plate and Ben from mine.

Great beet salad!

Tomorrow the four of us are riding to Sargents as the first stop, then to Monarch’s Pass – elevation over 11,000.  This would represent the highest peak of the tour.  FYI- we may not be able to post tomorrow night because we plan to stay at a campground.  That's the plan right now, but if we are inspired or if we see another bear, we may just ride another 15-20 miles to the next town with lodging.  We are going to take it one mile at a time. Jen and Ben will be riding with us for the next few days. The plan right now is that they will ride with us as far as Pueblo.  Perhaps we can use our magic and keep them a little longer!

  2. I still can't get over you meeting a bear! Ask Jen what I talked about during our conversation on Fathers Day about bears!! I had seen a true story on Dateline about a couple (they fought a bear and had to be helicopted out of the mountains) Jen laughed and said "Nanny there are no bears where we are going....The lake pictures have to be enlarged as those pictures are so breath-taking!! Be careful, and take care. Love you both..

  3. I agree, those blue lake shots must be framed. And I guess stray animals are not the only thing Di attracts, who is your cute little friend at the block party?

  5. Love the lake pictures! So pretty! Glad that you survived the bear sighting. Also, looks like you attracted a stray toddler in your "block party" picture! Ben seems to be the only one who noticed, though..
