Day 28: Hanksville, UT

Day 28

June 13, 2015

Miles: 51

Total Miles: 1032

Torrey to Hanksville

We woke at 7:30am this morning.  It was very slowwww getting up.  We thought we could afford it because we had 48 miles of riding mostly downhill. Breakfast came with the room rental so we went to eat at about 8:00am.  After breakfast, we packed slowly and then got ready to leave, but before, we stopped at the bike shop in town.  I wanted to buy rain pants before the next rainstorm.

Breakfast wasn’t that good.  Despite the lousy breakfast, Steve consumed his fill, because he sees it as fuel mostly.  I wish I could see it this way, but I can’t.  I had toast.  The oatmeal wasn’t that good so I didn’t eat it.

Have I said this yet ... Utah is such a beautiful state.  We rode Rt24 today.  It had amazing views.

Amazing reds

Here is a video I took of a scenic panoramic view.

We stopped off at a place called Fruitta.  A little place in the middle of nowhere.  A place that grows fresh fruit - apples, pears & berries, bakes pie and makes home made ice cream. It was about 10 miles outside of Torrey; we were encouraged to stop to try the fresh pies and ice cream.  So we decided to take the 3 mile detour to Fruitta.  We were glad we did ...

We had a lot of miles to ride today and time was slipping away, so we had to get back on the road.

We had this rain cloud following us all day. We were ahead of it every step of the way; so we thought.

Rain, rain go away

Here it comes

Its getting closer

Lots of thunder

More thunder

We did manage to out ride it for a while.

This place was open for lunch. A hole in the wall really.  We were the only ones there besides the people who own it and a few locals visiting.  It was a surprise to find it because it wasn't on our map. We ate burritos as the rain caught up and passed us by. Yeah!

Free WiFi and great coffee

Bean burritos with homemade corn chips and salsa

The terrain changes so quickly.

End of the reds

Fifty shades of grey

Near the end of the road

The last 16 miles were great riding. With the wind at our backs, we rode between 15-25 mph the rest of the way into Hanksville.  Our overall average mph for the day was 13.7.  We had lots of downhills!

Tomorrow we are taking a rest day in Hanksville to rest our legs and wash some cloths.

The clouds were spectacular today when they weren't grey!

So pretty!
