Day 7: Harpers Ferry, WV

Date:       July 15, 2019
Distance:   0 miles (driven 23 miles)
Day Trip:   Leesburg to Harpers Ferry, WV

Di and I got up around 7:30 and were downstairs for breakfast before 8am. That's pretty good for us, especially on a day we weren't riding the bikes.  We decided that another rest day was in order to ensure Di was eating enough salt.

The lonely diner

I ordered the spinach and feta cheese omelet and Di order the western omelet.  The western omelet has ham and that means more salt.
The Colonial Inn makes a good omelet!

Di had contacted Chris from the Stonehouse B&B in Harpers Ferry to say we wouldn't be there yesterday as planned. Di explained the situation and Chris offered to come to the Colonial Inn to pick us and our gear up and bring us to the Stonehouse. We readily accepted that offer because up to that point we had not yet devised a plan to get us to Harpers Ferry.  Chris texted Di during breakfast to say he would arrive around 10:30.  Because we had gotten up early, this gave us plenty of time to enjoy our breakfast and coffee.

Chris arrived in a pickup truck and in short time our bikes and bags were loaded in the bed and we were on our way to Harpers Ferry.
Our bikes get the day off and go for a ride

Harpers Ferry was 23 miles away by car and in short order Chris delivered us to the Stonehouse.  The first thing Di did was test out the bed.
Di's happy face give the bed the stamp of approval

I didn't take any pictures of the Stonehouse B&B except for this one.  It is a cool looking guitar made by Conrad (I hope I remembered that correctly).
For the guitar aficionados out there

After dropping our stuff in our room, we walked 50 feet to the Battle Grounds Cafe where Di and I each got an iced coffee.  There were some cool signs in the cafe that I appreciated.
Perhaps better thought than voiced

Hey, it helps you live longer, so indulge!

Coffee always gives you hope

Walking back to the Stonehouse (halfway down street on left)

We left the Battle Grounds Cafe and made the long walk back to the Stonehouse. Di decided to take nap to ascertain just how good the bed was.  The test would take two hours.  I went out on the porch and read my book.
My feet aren't really that big - its a trick of the camera

Di joined me on the porch for a bit and we decided we would go out for dinner.  It was now almost 4pm and we hadn't eaten since 9am, so even though we weren't that hungry it was at least something to do.  We walked 70 feet to The Rabbit Hole (its the next building after Battle Grounds Cafe).  It had cooled off a bit so we sat out back on the deck and enjoyed our meal.
The lonely diner (really, I'm not asking people to move)

My dinner was BBQ pork with a side salad

Di ordered a hot dog! Who is this woman?

Despite facing a formidable trek back to the Stonehouse B&B, we decide to walk around the town a bit.  Many of the structures are as they existed over 150 years ago.
Pretty cool wall

Sidewalks and walls of old stone

We walked the field where the armory used to be before the Union soldiers burned it down to prevent it falling into Confederate hands.

What you see if you climbed those stairs

We decided that of what was to be seen in Harpers Ferry, we had seen enough.  We headed back to the Stonehouse for a game of cribbage.  We are staying off the bikes for at least one more day and are hoping Chris is available tomorow to take us to our next destination, Williamsport.

Oh yeah, Di won the cribbage game.

  1. HF looks like such a cool little town - the scenery that is. It doesn't look like there is much to actually do. I'm glad Di is continuing to follow doctor's orders - that hot dog looked good! I've been on a bit of a hot dog kick lately. It's something about these hot summer nights. Good luck bumming another ride today! You guys are getting good at it!
