Day 48: Quebec City, Quebec, Canada

Day 48: Quebec City, Quebec, Canada

July 30, 2016

Miles: 37

Average Speed: 9.6 mph

Montmagny, QC to Quebec City, Quebec

We are in Quebec City! Wahoo!  I feel this is a milestone, because we have long known that family will join us here for a few days.  I also feel tired, because it is after 1am and I have been waiting for over three hours for the attached pictures to load.  I'd like to say I waited patiently, but I didn't.  I wish I knew some more apt expressions to vent my impatience other than "Sacre bleu!".

Let me explain our day.  No, there is too much.  Let me sum up.
Breakfast.  Satisfying.

We found a bike path 10 miles outside of the city

Di likes the bike path (or likes having her picture taken)

We came across a scenic rest stop with comfy chairs

We met a biking couple, Pete and Caitel (sp?)

We took the 4:30pm ferry to Quebec City.  Once on board the ferry, we met up with Pete and Caitel again and they were extremely helpful to us.  The gave us advice on good restaurants, go pubs, and when we alit from the ferry onto Quebec City, gave us directions to our hotel.  Pete and Caitel even went so far as to ride to the foot of the street that would take us from lower Quebec to our hotel in the upper part of Quebec.  They wisely choose not to ride with us any further because the road was extremely steep and in some places cobbled.  It was so steep that tourists took our pictures as we rode! That was a little weird.

We checked into our hotel and by 7pm where ready to explore Quebec City.

The streets were very crowded, especially compared to some of the towns we've visited recently

Di's sausage meal was called "The Godfather"

We split fried ice cream for dessert (butterscotch)

Thats the sum up.  Tomorrow, my mom, sisters and niece Gina will bring home to me and I'm very excited for that.

Day 47: Montmagny, Quebec, Canada - Rest Day

Day 47: Montmagny, Quebec, Canada

July 29, 2016

Miles: 3

Montmagny, QC

We slept until 8:30a this morning.  Last night, we both watched the democratic party convention until the end, then Steve finished writing the blog.  We both thought Hillary gave a great speech and are looking forward to the presidential debates.

This morning we had to change rooms, though in the same motel, because of how we booked the second night.  We decided to take a rest day here in Montmagny after we had arrived and checked in.  And since it is Friday night, rooms were limited.  It really wasn't a problem because we had to do laundry today so most of our clothes were in a laundry bag, so packing and unpacking wasn't much of a problem.

The weather today was just fabulous.  Sunny skies and 75 degrees all day.  First, we headed across the street to Normandin restaurant for breakfast.  A place that serves breakfast all day, so no worries like yesterday.  We will probably go to Normandin's tomorrow as well because they have a great breakfast menu and good coffee.  We have decided that the food here in Quebec is quite good, but if for some reason we are dissappointed, the reason is usually because we had ordered something that we didn't know we were ordering.  Our routine now is first, we look for english words on the all french written menu; second, we look for french words that we know the meaning; third, we use the phone to lookup words that we don't know to get the translation; and finally we guess.  Like this morning, I got an open-faced veggie and meat sandwich with fruit on the side.  Not quite what I thought, but good nonetheless.  However, Steve's breakfast looked much better and essentially what he thought; thanks to Steve he let me negotiate a trade.  I gave him some of my veggie, meat sandwich for one of his eggs and some potatoes.  See the problem rectified!

Steve very satisfied and me too after successfully negotiating a swap.

The motel didn't have guest laundry services, but luckily a laundromat was just across the street, which was very convenient.

Small, but practical.

Steve rigged a clothes line in the room that was quite effective.  All our clothes are drying nicely.   By morning they will be quite dry.

Rope space for all clothing - no pieces left behind

We then headed out to our third location for the day.  Surprise, a cafe in town!  It was close to 1:00p at this point, so we decided to ride our bikes into town - less than a mile. We ordered a coffee each, one chocolate eclair that we split, and then set up the cribbage board.

Cafe for two
A woman at the cafe asked if we wanted our picture taken.   She was very nice.  She spoke a little english, so she stayed to talking to us for a while.  She likes taking photos herself, she said.  She was from Ottawa, the capital city of Canada.

After a while, this cool car drove up and parked near to us.

Jaguar I think

We decided on a casual restaurant next to the cafe to have dinner.  Steve had a smoked meat sandwich, which turned out to be corned beef, and me thai hot and spicy chicken stir fry with rice noodles.  We both thought our dinner was wonderful!

Beautiful weather is forecast for tomorrow, and a mild wind coming out of the NE.   That means we have the wind behind us!  Yipeeee!

We are off to Quebec City about 36 miles away.  We can't wait to see everyone in QC on Sunday - Nanny, hopefully Poppy, Gina, Dine and Sandra!  We are all booked at the same hotel - Hotel Manior Victoria in Old Quebec City!

BTW - Steve and I split 1 game each today playing cribbage.  I continue to get great cards, and Steve continues to out peg me every game.  Practice makes perfect :)

Day 46: Montmagny, Quebec, Canada

Day 46: Montmagny, Quebec, Canada

July 28, 2016

Miles: 23

Average Speed: 11.8 mph

Saint-Jean-Port-Joli, QC to Montmagny, QC

Di and I arose around 9am today.  We were riding only 22 miles, so we were in no rush.  We took our time packing and we were ready to go by 10:30.  Unfortunately, Di's bike wasn't ready to go because she discovered her back tire was flat.  This was our first flat in over 5500 miles going back to last year.  Oh well, it was bound to happen.

Parting shot from the motel grounds

Getting a flat tire is not a disaster, but because of the delay spent repairing the flat, we didn't arrive at the Cafe OK until after 11am and breakfast was no longer being served.  Now that is a disaster.  I like my first meal of the day to be breakfast.  But, we could still order coffee, so all was not lost.  Our meal was really good, so the the restaurant name is really a misnomer, though Cafe OK does sound better than Cafe Really Good.

Lunch is served

Today I learned a very important French sentence: "Je voudrais avoir une autre tasse de cafe, s'il vous plait."  You might think I should have learned this earlier and you would be right, but pointing to my empty coffee cup with a mad look in my eye had been serving me well so far.  But, I guess saying it politely is more civilized.

Cafe OK is right on the shore of the St. Lawrence River, so after our meal we rode our bikes onto a pier to get a close-up view of the river.  Of course, Di had to get an even closer view.

By now it was already past noon and we hadn't even started our ride yet.  We rode only two miles before we say a sign for Musée des Anciens Canadiens de St-Jean-Port-Joli and we stopped in to check it out.  The proprietor of one of the stores we had visited had recommended it to us and said we would enjoy it.  I don't understand why the museum is named as it is unless the name means Museum of Wood Carvings, because the museum is filled with many examples of different types of wood carvings.  Some of the pieces were quite impressive and I really recommend that you drive up to Saint-Jean-Port-Joli to view all these wonderful works.  In the event you choose not to make that drive, I have probably taken enough pictures to save you that bother.

At this point perhaps you are happy you didn't make the drive to visit the museum.  But, if you are ever in the area for other reasons, you should definitely stop in.  Its worth it, if you're already here (hey, I just coined the museum's marketing slogan!).

At this point is was already almost 1:30 and we had only ridden two miles so far, so we decided to get going again.  However, just a couple of miles later, I saw a picnic area right on the St. Lawrence River and just had to stop to enjoy the beauty.

By this point it was after 2pm and we had only ridden 4 miles, so we decided we really had to get going.  We rode the remaining 19 miles without taking a break and with the level road and no wind, we really made good time.  (And by the way, the road was level, not slightly downhill, as some might suggest was the case given our relatively high average speed!).  We arrived at our motel around 3:45, rested for a bit, and then headed out to check out the town.  We hadn't yet decided if we would stay in Montmagny for one night or two and wanted to see if the town was worthy of a second night.
Don't ask me what this is all about

We decided to eat at Chez Octave because we were walking by and Di was hungry and insisted we stop and eat now.  It was a good choice because everything we had there was excellent, starting with the lemonade that Di said was actually real lemonade.

We both ordered the cream of vegetable soup for appetizers and for our entrees Di the salmon and I the ravioli.  Di said it was the best food she's had in a long time and immediately picked up her phone and called the motel to extend our stay for another night.  I guess we will be eating at Chez Octave again.

We walked around town a bit after dinner and then sat in a park to play another game of cribbage.  I won this game, but Di is still ahead of me by three games to two.  My skill at cribbage is no match for her luck at cards.  At least that's what I tell myself.
This was in town

No victory dance today

We will stay here in Montmagny tomorrow doing our typical rest day activities, such as sleeping in and eating and drinking coffee.  I can't wait.
