Day 89: Lexington, VA

Day 89

August 13, 2015

Miles: 45

Daleville to Lexington

Di woke me up a little after 6am to ask me if I thought we should take a rest day today or ride on to Lexington.  Immediately I thought: Rest day! Rest day!  But, to be considerate of Di's wishes, instead of saying "Rest day! Rest day!", I asked Di what she wanted to do.  Di said she wanted to ride today and take a rest day tomorrow.  Rats.  That'll teach me to be considerate.

We went to the free breakfast offered by the Super 8 and, while not exactly lousy, it was no Hampton Inn breakfast. I had a waffle and a muffin (or two) and Di had toast.  Not a great breakfast to start a day of bicycling, but we didn't have a big day ahead of us.

Meager meal

We didn't get on the road until 9:30am because Di called a few places in Lexington before finding a place with vacancies (horrors! Hampton Inn had no vacancies!).  We found our way back to the TransAmerica Bike Trail and the beautiful Virginia scenery to which we have become accustomed.

This is how we usually ride (although it sometimes annoys other cyclists for some reason)

We arrived in the town of Buchanan around 12:30pm after having ridden less than 20 miles.  Part of the reason we rode so few miles was because we had some good sized hills to climb, but the main reason is we were tired.  This was our seventh biking day in a row and that's a lot for a couple of slackers like Di and me.

The town of Buchanan loves flags

We stopped at The Fountain restaurant for lunch.  It is an old establishment and is the type of place where you feel compelled to order a chocolate milk shake.  So I did.  Actually, I first ordered a coffee milkshake.  The waitress looked at me with a quizzical expression and asked, "Do you want me to add some coffee to a vanilla milkshake?"  I told her no, that I wanted coffee ice cream.  "We don't have any of that", she replied.  "Well, what about coffee syrup?", I asked.  She laughed and said she never heard of such a thing.  She then politely asked me to choose my milkshake from the traditional flavors of chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry.  And that's how I came to have a chocolate milkshake.

That chocolate milkshake really hit the spot

The highlight of the day was our trip to see the Natural Bridge. It was owned by Thomas Jefferson for a while and George Washington surveyed it. It is one of the seven natural wonders of the world (so we hear). It was beautiful and we wished we had more time to explore the trails and the caves but we didn't stay long bc we knew we had a long day ahead.

That little speck of yellow is me. It's that huge! It was really cool to see

Tomorrow is a rest day. Definitely a rest day.

  1. I know my grammatically correct father would never write "bc", even after 7 consecutive days of riding like a maniac. I've got your number! Ben and I laughed so hard when we saw this! Di even has the big crazy hair like I did in this exact spot! I remember that when we were about to take a picture right where Di is, a woman came up to Ben and I and told us: "You look so happy! You should be on the cover of a magazine!" And I would say the same thing to you two right now! Enjoy your day off in Lexington, its a great spot to hang out!

  2. Seven days in a row! You guys are amazing. And Jen because of your comment, I had to go back and read the whole thing again to find out what you were talking about with the "bc"! Turns out I read it too fast the first time anyway! Learned a lot more on the second read. LOL! Looking forward to seeing you guys real soon! ❤️

  3. Plagiarizing now?? Did you steal someone's Intellectual Property? That is hysterical! Jen told me about it so I knew what to look for. How crafty!! You two have a great sense of humor, all the way from CA to VA! Such an inspirational couple!!
