Day 37: Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada - Rest Day

Day 37: Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada

July 19, 2016

Miles: 0

Fredericton, NB

Fredericton is a great city and the Capital City of New Brunswick.  Today in Fredericton, we were very relaxed as we got ready for the next three days of long and hilly riding. We feel great physically and are well rested. We feel prepared for this next stretch through NB about 163 miles to Edmundston, NB, which is the final town before we enter the province of Quebec. We have tomorrow's route ready and the motel is booked!

Like most of our rest days, we did laundry that was much needed due to our disastrous B&B experience in Gagetown; we hit book stores and coffee shops, and explored to experience the culture of the town.  We really enjoyed our time in Fredericton.  It just feels right here!

We ate breakfast at Cora's this morning.  A diner that serves breakfast all day.  We just loved this place.  Tomorrow we plan to eat breakfast again at Cora's.

Fresh and delicious

This is city hall below - notice the guards in place.  The tradition of 'changing of the guards' has been taking place here in Fredericton for a long time.  Our waitress at Cora's couldn't even say how long.  This tradition inspired by the changing of the guards at Buckingham Palace, but only done so during the summer months in New Brunswick.  Canada, a country with both British and French influence, continues with certain traditions as part of its very fabric. Shortly, we will experience more French influence as we travel north to Quebec.

Once again Jen and Ben have influenced our leisure time. First, by getting us back on our bikes 5 years ago, and now playing cribbage.  Apparently Jen and Ben are hooked.  So, Steve searched for a board today so we can start playing.  Just so you know, Steve will be packing the board in his bags (just under 1 lb - every ounce matters :)   I played my first cribbage game ever today.  Steve is an experienced cribbage player, so I have a long way to go, but I am confident that I too will be a competitive cribbage player soon.

Here below is the footbridge that took us to the walking path by the St. John River.  We have been following the St. John River for hundreds of miles now.  It really is spectacular!

We ran into this weeping willow along our walk.

When I was a kid, I always thought of the Weeping Willow tree as being alive. Meaning a living creature, though a nice one.

Dinner was on the terrace, at the Terrace Restaurant.  I started off with a rose sangria, and Steve a mead.

The Terrace, a farm fresh to table restaurant.  Steve enjoyed his lamb shepard pie, and me Arctic Charr fish.  Just yummy!

Quiet and intimate - had to be, we were the only one's there

At one point during dinner, a beautiful rainbow made an appearance.

We are off to Hartland tomorrow.  We expect to leave early to hopefully arrive in Hartland before 6:00p.  It is a 61 mile or 99 kilometre ride tomorrow.

  1. That looked like a perfect day. I feel relaxed and content just reading about it. From the beautiful breakfast to the scenic, albeit lonely, dinner, topped off with a rainbow. Lovely.

  5. What a great day! I have been wondering if cribbage would make an appearance on this trip. Ben and I have been playing every night. And we also have the app on our phones so we can practice. The app is great because you can review your game afterward to see if you made any suboptimal plays. Good job playing in a public café too, that's how we are going to bring cribbage back in style! One café at a time.

  6. Last Thursday night, everyone was talking about cribbage, even dad got into the conversation with the kids, telling them he started playing while in the Army. I just told him I am going to look for his board so the kids can play on Thursday nights. May I say it again, all the photos taken along the St John River are "spectacular" So happy you really enjoyed your rest day and explored the city of Fredericton. Also liked the view from the Terrace and the rainbow that appeared for a special couple!!! As I am typing this comment, I remind myself you had a long riding day today. Stay safe and take care. Love you
