Day 60
July 15, 2015
Miles: 42
Miles: 42
Clinton to Sedalia
We woke at 6:00a this morning to my phone alarm. As soon as I heard it, I shut it off and rolled back to sleep. We both woke an hour later; we dragged ourselves out of bed and went to the continental breakfast. We were dead tired; perhaps it was because of the two long days we rode in the heat, but we knew it would be a slow morning. We decided to take it easy after breakfast to digest our food. We watched the Tour de France for a bit to get caught up as we packed our bikes. We left the hotel at about 10:15a, then set out to search for the KATY bike-rail trail. The only three hotels in town were located about 3.5 miles away from the KATY trail entrance, and we got a bit lost of course, so it ended up being about 4.5 miles before we hit the trail. The moment we started riding on the limestone surface we felt/heard our legs cry out.
This morning I had oatmeal, fruit and eggs and oranges for breakfast. Steve had an omelet, fruit and toast. We were both like zombies this morning during breakfast.

Steve sporting a new necktie that Jen gave him. It contains water absorbing materials designed to keep the neck area cool all day. Jen bought me one too. Steve really likes it; I wore it once and thought it was heavy on my neck, but since Steve raved about it today, perhaps I'll give it another try. When I asked him if he felt it was heavy, he simply replied 'what does that have to do with it, it reminds me of Jen'.
We stopped in Windsor to take a quick rest, eat some food and hydrate. I had packed cheese and crackers, cashews and plums. Steve also decided to play on the train in Windsor.

I thought the small 'do not enter' sign saying no horse and wagons allowed was ironic. To think just a couple hundred years ago that was all that travelled these trails.
I had to rescue a couple more of my turtle friends. Although I'm not to sure how much saving they needed on this trail. We only saw two other cyclists, and two walkers on the today.

We stop at Casey's general stores whenever we see one. They carry Naked fruit and vegetable juices. Its all natural, no sugar added or preservatives. Its good to replenish our electrolytes.
We had all kinds of surroundings on the trail today. Some areas with no trees at all and some with trees that have grown into a tunnel.
We rode just 42 miles today. It was all we could do; we were wide out! We were exhausted from yesterday and Monday's rides. We realized that because it was so hot the last two days, we just couldn't keep up with hydrating and replenishing our electrolytes; we decided to get off the trial at Sedalia at about 5:00p to eat what ended up being out dinner. We then decided to get a hotel in town and save the rest for tomorrow.
We plan to ride the trail all day tomorrow again. Despite it's slow surface, it is much safer and shorter than riding the roads.
