Fairfield, CT - 2

Day 4

We had a great day relaxing.  After my post this morning, we hopped on the bikes; rode 1.8 miles into the town center of Fairfield.   A great university town.   First we arrived at Zane's Cycles.  Steve bought two tires, a patch kit, plus other supplies.  He bought me a new insulated water bottle ;).  Then we went to a restaurant with outside seating. I had a salad with salmon; Steve had a chicken burger and we split an order of sweet potato fries.  Just wonderful!

Steve very happy after his purchases

Steve decided to pack the second new tire as a spare.  He felt he had more life left on the front tire.  I concurred since my front tire looks a bit more worn then his. I hope we don't regret this decision!  I wish I had a spare, but Zane's didn't have my tire size or I would have bought a spare too!

Fairfield University Bookstore

We searched for a coffee cafe that served a great dark roast.   For some reason, cafe's here are restaurants with bars.  Couldn't easily find a cafe serving just coffee, so we settled on the bookstore because a Starbucks was inside.  We stayed all day working on our maps for tomorrow to Yonkers, NY and drinking coffee.  Look closely at the above picture - lower right corner.  I noticed it just a few minutes ago.  The damn GARMIN photo bombed the picture!

We plan to get an early start tomorrow.  We have about 50 miles to ride to Yonkers. The weather forecast looks great.  We can't wait to get going again!

Steve's entry

Today was a relaxing day; it seemed we did nothing more than eat and drink coffee (and also the Guinness I had with lunch).  Of course we worked on the Garmin.  One of our problems is the Garmin doesn't have any maps.  I know, this sounds a little strange given it is a GPS, but this is part of a very clever business plan.  Garmin sells the device with no maps and then offers to sell them for $70 per map.  This kind of ticked me off, so I spent some time looking for a way to load some free maps and I finally found a web site offering this service.  I selected the map I needed for tomorrow (western Connecticut and Yonkers) and submitted my request.  I then received an email from the site saying my request had been received and my map would be emailed in 2.4 days.  So, some time on Wednesday I will receive the map I need Monday.  Ha ha ha ha!  I then made a map of the entire rest of the trip and that map will also be sent to me in 2.4 days.  At least in 2.4 days we may have some maps to load into the Varmint.

Day 3 Stuff
I took no pictures today.  I know that will come as a shock to those who know me and my ubiquitous camera, but its true.  Today was a day off from riding and picture taking.  To make up for this I am presenting some pictures from yesterday.

Here is Di as we are leaving the Seahorse Inn.  I loved staying at the Seahorse -- it is very spacious and furnished beautifully and breakfast (quiche, toast, home made strawberry and peach marmalade) was wonderful.
Di looking pleased we are leaving at 11:00 instead of 11:30

Our route took us through some of the less posh areas of New Haven and Bridgeport, but then we were rewarded with a pedestrian/bike path along the coast.

Here is another picture of the shoreline bike path:

The scenery was so beautiful I couldn't resist yet one more shot:

  1. It sounds like you had a well deserved day off from biking today. Yesterday sounded like a very frustrating day. I hope you are well rested and can sleep tonight after all that coffee. :-)

  3. Auntie Dianne! You figured it out!

Glad you two enjoyed Fairfield (and got through some seedy areas of New Haven and Bridgeport). Good luck in Yonkers (hopefully you'll get some NY pizza).
