Day 61: Poultney, Vermont

Day 61: Poultney, Vermont

August 12, 2016

Miles: 40

Middlebury, VT to Poultney, VT

Yesterday's ride just wiped us out.  It was the first day on the tour that we experienced 95 degree weather and 90% humidity and it caught us off guard.  Pairing this temperature with the wind and hills made it a difficult day.  By the end of the day yesterday, we were both exhausted, dehydrated and electrolyte deprived.  It wasn't until we woke this morning (both with headaches) that we figured it out.  We had some work to do to get ready for today's ride.  Starting with hydrating.

Our morning empties.

Tonight's blog is going to be brief because it is already late as I write this entry.  I lost an hour because it took 1 hour to be served dinner because the restaurant was swamped and  we were told they were short staff.  Also because the girls beach volleyball game is on tonight and I want to watch it.

We had another hot and humid day ahead of us.  We hit the road this morning at 10:00a.  Today's ride was much better because we basically babied ourselves.  We stopped frequently to rest, hydrate and to replenish electrolytes.  We took it easy on the hills and we only rode 40 miles.  Tonight we feel 100% better.

We were on a 4 mile dirt road today

that offered beautiful scenery

Taking a rest break under tree cover

Very bumpy ride

Lunch that we really needed at the 18 mile mark.  We were still recovering from yesterday's ride.

I liked her face ...

and the babies were cute.

Farm scenery

More farm scenery

We stopped for 5 minutes after finding cover to let the storm pass us by.

We crossed over into NY to only cross back over into Vermont.

We are in Vermont tonight.

Bentley House - B&B where we are staying tonight.

Dinner that we waited 1 hour for.  It was good and because of the wait it cost us 1/2 the price  - complements of the restaurant.

Dessert - Juicy Fruit.  Steve says the best gum ever!

I still haven't done the route for tomorrow - need to do that next.  We will be riding south and into the wind like most other days.  The forecast is rain for tomorrow and Sunday so we will have to navigate the weather over the next couple of days.

  1. I hope you guys sleep late then decide to take a rest day. You need it even if you don't think you do. Suggestions...Stay in bed and order takeout. Take the rainy day to work on routes for next few day. ❤️

  2. Hope the forecast is wrong and you see just cloudy skies today. Mid day nap under a tree would be appropriate. Take your time and enjoy the scenery! Have a great ride today.

  3. Steve: Just looking at you in that long sleeve shirt makes me sweat! Does it really keep you cooler than a short sleeve shirt? In true Lisi fashion, I have watched the Olympics every night, too. I'm so happy you are Di are traveling south and will be home soon. I hope the rain holds out and it's not so hot today for your ride.
