Rest Day
I slept through continential breakfast this morning. Steve woke early this morning about 8:30a. This is unusual because I am usually up first on our days off. I'm not sure what got into him today. Yesterday's ride was hilly and long, so I guess I needed the rest, not sure why he didn't need the rest too. Luckily Steve was able to grab a cup of coffee, or two, and he had some toast with peanut butter to hold him over until I woke up. Steve watched Game of Thrones on HBOGo while waiting for me to wake, which was about 10:45a. I had watched the Game of Thrones the night before while he wrote his blog entry. It was a good episode this week, not what I thought would happen.
Finally, we routinely started our rest day. As usual, we began this morning with washing a load of clothes.
After we hung our clothes to dry, a shuttle brought us to town center. Our motel is about 1/2 mile away. We decided not to ride the bikes because we wanted to give our butts a break, and walking would have been too much effort. First order of business, lunch! We quickly found a luncheon cafe; Steve had a tuna melt and me, a black bean and avocado burger. Good and GF too! I've gotten very lucky so far with my DR (Dietary Restrictions as Jen would put it).
Hand cut fries were delicious! |
We then strolled around town a bit and then stopped in a book store. Finally, our second stop, a coffee shop and then to the post office. Steve mailed home the two books he finished reading. So far, we are pretty predictable aren't we?
Steve said he looks like a goober here |

Coffee and relaxation!

We decided to walk to the harbor. The weather was amazing and there was a beautiful park area overlooking the harbor.
The view was perfect and the day was turing out to be peaceful as well.

Steve thought it was a restful day too. Then the unexpected. Well not really the unexpected.
One minute enjoying the view |
And the next |
Out cold |
He must have needed a rest too! After a short nap, Steve was ready to go, but we decided to retreat back to the room. We had to program the Garmin route for tomorrow because we are officially off the bike map's until we re-enter the US in Vermont. The East Coast Bike map ends here at Bar Harbor. We have about 150 miles to the Canadian Border and we want to make it to St. George, New Brunswick in three days. I also had to secure lodging, and of course, write this blog entry as well.
After two hours of working on the Garmin route and trying to secure lodging for the next couple nights, it looks like there is no availabilty for tomorrow night; however, luckily we found a campground about 59 miles away. It has running water, and more, warm showers so this will work out nicely. We are carrying a tent and sleeping bags after all, so we really should use them. Well anyway, we have lodging secured the following night in a small town at the border called Lubec, on the US side.
We then decided to get dinner at a restaurant walking distance from the motel. A really short walk up a hill, a few steps later and then we were there. This is a view of our motel from the restaurant. It was about 8:40pm at this time and I still needed to upload the pictures and write the blog. I knew then, it would be a late night :( Hmm .. oddly, I feel very awake right now. It must have been the late morning rise :)
Another view from the restaurant.
Tomorrow we are off to Columbia Falls, 59 miles to the campground - Cottonwood Camping and RV Park. We may not have cell service or WiFi, so just in case we miss a blog post, this is why so not to worry!
I don't know why I never thought of Bar Harbor as an actual body of water- I thought it was just the town name. The harbor is really beautiful! But, I'm glad you are moving on because now Ben will have to stop saying "BAH HABA" in his most annoying New England accent impression.
ReplyDeleteWe are bringing our bikes to block island today! We are going to go for a ride and then hopefully a swim if the water isn't unbearably cold. Have fun today, enjoy camping out! (Really, Di, it's fun!)
Sounds like a great day of rest. There's nothing like a nap in the grass on a sunny day. Have a safe ride to Columbia Falls.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Brian, sounds like a perfect rest day! Hope today's ride is an easy one and that the campground is comfortable....looking forward to the Canadian installment of your blog 😀🚴
